Zinc is essential for a variety of health functions, including cellular metabolism, assisting the immune system, wound and/or burn healing, and DNA and protein synthesis. This mineral is also thought to have antioxidant properties that protect against aging. Severe zinc deficiency is a leading cause of death in developing countries, but even slightly low zinc levels can have a wide range of health consequences.

The zinc blood test is used to monitor zinc exposure, evaluate suspected nutritional deficiency, investigate possible causes for diabetes or delayed wound healing; growth retardation; or to follow therapies such as oral zinc therapy used in Wilson’s disease.
